The authors describe implementation experience from building an experimental Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) backbone within the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure initiative. The deployment covers two segments: a physically protected government segment for restricted communications and a public segment for finance and health use cases. The paper is intended as a practical guide for similar deployments by sharing effort, planning, budget, and timeline considerations observed during execution.
